Clarification of the Position of the Georgian Church on the Question of the Autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church (08.10.2018)

At times, both in the media of Russia and the media of Ukraine occur pieces of biased information about the position of the Georgian Church on the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, both of them seeking to twist our words into the suitable interpretation for them, respectively.
A similar fact took place at the Patriarchate of Georgia in the wake of the visit of the Secretary of the Ukrainian Rada (Parliament), – the Ukrainian channels promulgated false information that the Georgian Church supported the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church which is not consistent with the reality.
While meeting with him, the guest declared that they were seeking to gain autocephaly for the unified Ukrainian Church which should be based as on the demand of the Government of the country so also on that of all the hierarchs under the supervision of Metropolitan Onufriy and should be canonically well founded.
If it is carried out, naturally, we will welcome the fact but, as we have remarked earlier, at this stage it does not appear to be an easily attainable objective.
The most crucial is to avert the confrontation among the people which may ensue more complicated processes, – added the Catholicos-Patriarch.
As concerns the position of the Georgian Church, it is unchanged and, as we have mentioned earlier, acknowledges: that until the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Patriarchate of Russia confirm their respective final official decisions, the Patriarchate of Georgia will forbear to give assessment of the situation.
